Julia “Butterfly” Hill is an American environmentalist and environmental activist, most notable for her courageous actions to protect trees. 👏
From 1997 to 1999, he lived in an ancient sequoia tree in Northern California and fought against logging.
Hill’s most famous work was the protection of a giant sequoia tree named “Luna”. This tree was about 60 meters high and had a history of 1500 years. It was located in California’s Redwood Millers (Redwood Forest) and was threatened by logging companies. In 1997, 23-year-old Hill climbed a tree to prevent it from being cut down and lived there for two years, 738 days to be exact.
This act attracted worldwide attention and inspired global actions and campaigns for environmental protection. While living in the tree, Julia stayed on a narrow platform, endured extreme weather and faced various challenges. Through this, he was able to attract international attention for the purpose of protecting trees in the Redwood Millers Forest.🫡
In 1999, he reached an agreement with the Pacific Lumber Company, resulting in the protection of 3 hectares of land in and around Luna. Julia Hill later wrote books and lectured on environmental activism, conservation, and sustainable living. His book The Legacy of Luna (2000) was also released, in which he recounts his time living in the Luna Tree.💬
