The saiga is an unusual steppe antelope that survived the mammoths and ice age that appeared 50-70 thousand years ago. However, such a long history did not help its survival in the modern world – the species is considered endangered.

In order to increase the saiga population, in 2016, the “Saigachiy” complex (landscape) reserve with a total area of 628.3 thousand hectares and a protection zone of 219.8 thousand hectares was established in Moynaq and Kungirot districts of Karakalpakstan.
